Bio Friends Holding a Groundbreaking Ceremony for the 2nd DME Plant

Bio Friends, Inc (CEO Wonjun Cho), which is leading a carbon neutral era through clean energy businesses, is preparing for the second leap by holding a groundbreaking ceremony for the 2nd DME Plant on February 14, 2022.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held near Bio Friends’ 1st DME Plant in Boeun-Gun, Chungbuk. The 2nd DME Plant can produce 10,000 TPY of DME and the size of the plant is around 10,000 m2.
Captured CO2 from the kiln of the cement factory owned by SUNGSHIN CEMENT Co., Ltd. in Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, shall be converted into methanol and this methanol will be transported to the 2nd DME plant to produce a high value-added carbon neutral clean energy DME.
Construction of the 2nd DME Plant will be completed in the first half of 2023. It is expected that this plant will be Korea’s largest DME production facility. In the near future, Bio Friends is planning to enter an LPG-rDME blend market and supply DME as a fuel for an agricultural DME power generator and a DME-hydrogen fuel cell.
The plant can be utilized as an energy convergence station. In addition, after discussing with LPG refueling service providers in the agricultural and fishing area, Bio Friends will be able to establish a basis for a small-scale of ‘on-site’ hydrogen refueling business using DME as a fuel.
If Bio Friends begins to produce hydrogen through electrolysis or import green hydrogen or produce methanol and DME using captured CO2 in 2027, the company can successfully transform into a carbon neutral fuel producer or echo-friendly eFuel producer.
Headed by European countries and the United States, this ‘net-zero’ projects have been promoted since 2021. One of main projects is to produce clean DME from captured CO2 and blend it with LPG. DME providers and LPG providers are actively working together to promote various LPG-DME blend projects and South Korea which uses large amount of LPG is paying attention to these projects.
Europe has long been investing in and demonstrating utilization of DME in many areas such as automobile DME engine, industrial fuel, and household fuel. A Dutch LPG provider SHV Energy and UGI USA are currently leading the LPG-rDME blend market. Suburban Propane and Oberon Fuels are cooperating with a Chilean LPG company to supply LPG-rDME blend in Chile. Europe and USA are entering the age of de-carbonization by building a cooperation system between LPG providers and DME providers.
Most of the greenhouse gases are CO2. Among CO2 recycling businesses, methanol produced by hydrogen reaction of CO2 is considered to have the easiest market accessibility. DME converted from this methanol can replace diesel easily and be blended with LPG. This cycle can be called a low carbon chemical conversion of CO2 industry.
As a proof of this, a coal business company PT Bukit Asam (BA) Indonesia and Air Product have started a construction of 1.4 million tons of DME plant using coal sources. These two companies also commenced a project that is to replace one million tons of LPG among 6.4 million tons of LPG usage with clean energy DME in Indonesia.
In regard with this, Bio friends is about to choose the final winner of a project that is to construct a 5,000 TPY of DME plant using methanol in Indonesia and distribute DME as a fuel to adjacent islands. DME will also be used as an eco-friendly refrigerant, an aerosol propellant, and a blowing agent.
An official of Bio Friends said, “In order to expedite the age of carbon neutral, reduce greenhouse gas emission by40% in 2030, and realize net-zero, we are planning to distribute DME and methanol which are considered as one of carbon neutral fuels. Also, our other goals are to produce fully imported methanol from CO2 in Korea and transform the current industrial ecosystem into clean energy DME.” He added, “We hope these methanol and DME become a bridge that connect current fossil fuels with Carbon Capture Utilization (CCU) products.”
